Molinasque: Grotesk dans fra "Maskerade suite"

I 1922 ble det planlagt en forestilling på Nationaltheatret, hvor komedien Maskerade skulle settes opp. Maskerade er skrevet av Norges store forfatter Ludvig Holberg, første gang framført i 1724. Halvorsen fikk i oppgave å skrive musikken til denne nye produksjonen, hvor han av teaterets økonomiske årsaker var begrenset til et lite orkester på 15 musikere. Suiten som ble laget senere, er for symfoniorkester. Maskerade handler om et maskeball og dets mange utrolige kjærlighetskonflikter i barokkens København.
Holbergs verk inkluderer mange morsomheter, komedie og ballett, tema som passet Halvorsen utmerket. Her var det en rekke etterligninger, pastisjer, av dansemusikk fra 1700-tallet med satser som Cotillon, Gavotte, Passepied, Menuett m.fl. Originalversjonen av suiten fra Maskerade hadde ni satser. Molinasque var suitens 6. sats.
Intensjonene med korpsarrangementet er å få Halvorsens orkestrale instrumentasjon best mulig frem, bl.a. med bruk av 2 soloklarinetter. I tillegg danner 1. og 2. tutti klarinett sammen med saxofoner, bass klarinett, euphonium, strykerseksjonen. Bassinstrumentene ellers dekker stort sett orkesterets bass seksjon. Fløyter, obo og fagott følger oftest original instrumentasjon.

Molinasque er en grotesk dans full av fart og spenning. Morsomhetene nærmest bobler over. «Grotesk” viser til det karikerte og overdrevne. Tyngre instrumentering, mørkere klangfarge og rytmisk uregelmessighet skaper kontrastene. Det er fart, spenning, morsomheter og følelser, uvanlig  og mer “ekspressiv” i karakter. Her møter vi Halvorsen på sitt aller beste.
Grotesk dans er et eksempel på hvordan Halvorsen forener formell eleganse med romantisk uttrykk, og gir nytt liv til den gamle dans gjennom orkestral fargelegging, rytmisk variasjon og karakterportretter. Verket kan fungere både som lett underholdningsmusikk og som mer seriøst orkesterverk med dypere kunstneriske kvaliteter.

Molinasque: Dance Grotesque from the "Masquerade Suite"

In 1922, a performance was planned at the National Theatre, where the comedy Maskerade was to be staged. Masquerade was written by Norway's great author Ludvig Holberg, first performed in 1724. Halvorsen was tasked with writing the music for this new production, where for financial reasons the theatre was limited to a small orchestra of 15 musicians. The suite that was composed later is for symphony orchestra. Mascarade is about a masked ball and its many incredible love conflicts in baroque Copenhagen.
Holberg's work includes many farces, comedy and ballet, themes that suited Halvorsen perfectly. Here there were a number of imitations, pastiches, of dance music from the 18th century with movements such as Cotillon, Gavotte, Passepied, Menuett and others. The original version of the suite from Maskerade had nine movements. Molinasque was the 6th movement of the suite.

The intention of the band arrangement is to bring out Halvorsen's orchestral instrumentation in the best possible way, including the use of 2 solo clarinets. In addition, the 1st and 2nd tutti clarinets, together with saxophones, bass clarinet, euphonium, form the string section. The bass instruments otherwise mostly cover the orchestra's bass section. Flutes, oboe and bassoon usually follow the original instrumentation. Molinasque is a grotesque dance full of speed and excitement. The fun almost bubbles over. "Grotesk" refers to the caricatured and exaggerated. Heavier instrumentation, darker timbre and rhythmic irregularity create the contrasts. There is speed, excitement, fun and emotions, unusual and more "expressive" in character. Here we meet Halvorsen at his very best.
Grotesk dans is an example of how Halvorsen combines formal elegance with romantic expression, and gives new life to the old dance through orchestral coloring, rhythmic variation and character portraits. The work can function both as light entertainment music and as a more serious orchestral work with deeper artistic qualities.

Odd Terje Lysebo

har vært Kultursjef og Kulturskolerektor i Larvik kommune. Han startet Larvik Musikkskole i 1974 og ledet den fram til han gikk av med pensjon i 2016.
Han har en bred musikalsk bakgrunn, med bl.a. studier i teori og komposisjon med Antonio Bibalo og orkesterdireksjon med Øivin Fjeldstad i Oslo, Igor Markevitsj i Paris og Frederick Fennell i USA. I mange år har han gjestedirigert over hele Europa, USA og Asia. I Europa har han dirigert i over 20 land, bl.a. Danmark Radios Symfoniorkester, det berømte Musique de la Guarde Republicain i Paris, i USA alle forsvarets representasjonskorps i Washington DC og her hjemme har han stadig vært benyttet av samtlige forsvarskorps.

I USA har han hatt gjesteprofessorater ved en rekke universiteter og college, bl.a. Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, Luther College, Concordia College og Winthrop University. I Europa har han gjesteforelest bl.a.  på Norges Musikkhøgskole, flere av musikkkonservatoriene, Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien i Stockholm, Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa. Han har dirigert det Norske, Svenske og Finske nasjonale ungdomskorps.Han dirigerer også operaoppsetninger, og i 2007 ble hans framførelse av Shostakovitsj opera The Priest and his servant Balda kåret til den beste operaframførelsen i Irland dette året.Odd Terje Lysebo har brukt mye av sin tid på samtidsmusikk og han har uroppført en rekke verk av norske og internasjonale samtidskomponister. For sitt arbeid har han mottatt en rekke hedersbevisninger som H.M. Kongens fortjenestemedalje i 2020.

En rekke priser bl.a. The Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Orpheus Award for ”significant and lasting contribution to the cause of music in America”.  Larvik kommunes kulturpris, Sparebanken Nords kulturpris, NMFs æresmedalje for dirigenter, priser fra Purdue University og St. Olaf College, USA. Han er også tildelt KS æresmedalje. Han er æresmedlem av International Music Camp, N.D. USA, Larvik Skolekorps, Larvik Ungdoms Musikkorps, Sandefjord Ungdomskorps og Nanset Blåseensemble. I en årrekke har han instrumentert en rekke klassiske verk for korps. Over 400 arrangementer derav en lang rekke større orkesterverk av kjente komponister.

Odd Terje Lysebo

was Head of Culture and Principal of the Culture School in Larvik Municipality. He founded the Larvik Music School in 1974 and led it until his retirement in 2016. He has a broad musical background, including studies in theory and composition with Antonio Bibalo and orchestral conducting with Øivin Fjeldstad in Oslo, Igor Markevitsj in Paris and Frederick Fennell in the USA. For many years he has guest conducted throughout Europe, the USA and Asia. In Europe he has conducted in more than 20 countries, including the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the famous Musique de la Guarde Republicain in Paris, in the USA all the representative bands of the armed forces in Washington DC and in Norway he has been constantly conducting all the bands of the armed forces.

In the USA he has held guest professorships at a number of universities and colleges, including Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, Luther College, Concordia College and Winthrop University. In Europe he has given guest lectures at, among others, the Norwegian Academy of Music, several of the music conservatories, the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, the Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa. He has conducted the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish national youth bands. He also conducts opera productions, and in 2007 his performance of Shostakovich's opera «The Priest and his servant Balda» was selected as the best opera performance in Ireland that year.

Odd Terje Lysebo has spent much of his time on contemporary music and he has premiered music by Norwegian and other international contemporary composers. For his work he has received a lot of honors such as H.M. The King's Medal of Merit in 2020. A number of awards including The Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Orpheus Award for "significant and lasting contribution to the cause of music in America". Larvik Municipality's Cultural Prize, Sparebanken Nord's Cultural Prize, NMF's Medal of Honor for Conductors, awards from Purdue University and St. Olaf College, USA. He has also been awarded the KS Medal of Honor. He is an honorary member of International Music Camp, N.D. USA, Larvik School Band, Larvik Youth Band, Sandefjord Wind Band and Nanset Wind Ensemble. For a number of years he has orchestrated many classical works for wind bands. More than 400 arrangements including a largo number of major orchestral works by well-known composers.
